Canada and Brazil share strong academic and cultural connections, which have expanded over the years.

  • Canada is currently the #1 study abroad destination for Brazilian students.
  • Approximately 16,000 Brazilians came to Canada to study in 2010.
  • The Brazilian Association of Canadian Studies (ABECAN), founded in 1991, includes 12 Canadian Studies centres throughout Brazil and has more than 500 members.
  • Brazil and Canada have extremely strong and longstanding economic and trade relations.
  • Brazil is Canada’s 10th largest trading partner in the world.
  • In 2010, two-way trade between Canada and Brazil totalled CDN $5.9 billion.

Scientific collaboration

2010 marked a significant year for Canada-Brazil academic relations. This was the year the Brazilian government identified Canada as a strategic partner for collaboration, and both countries signed the Framework Agreement for Cooperation on Science, Technology and Innovation. This agreement promotes strengthened collaboration in research and development in scientific and technological areas.

The complementary Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Mobility and Scientific Cooperation was signed on August 30, 2010 to encourage joint research projects between the two countries with the aim of fostering innovation.

Canada and Brazil have also established a Joint Committee for Cooperation on Science, Technology and Innovation, which convened for the first time in Ottawa, Canada, in June 2011.
